Russia’s Lavrov calls on Turkey to return Afrin to Damascus control

The easiest way to normalize the situation in Afrin is to return the city to the control of the Syrian government, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday, APA reports citing RIA Novosti.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan never stated that Turkey wants to occupy Afrin, Lavrov said, adding. “Turkey has achieved its goal, and therefore, it should return Afrin to the Syrian government’s control.”

On January 20, Turkey, in cooperation with the Free Syrian Army, launched Operation Olive Branch with the stated aim of eliminating the PYD/PKK and Daesh terrorist presence in Syria’s northern Afrin district. Afrin was liberated from terrorists on March 18.
