The increase in Russian natural gas imports to Georgia in recent years is not related to a decline in Azerbaijani gas volumes.
As reported by Yeniavaz.com, Givi Sanikidze, a member of the Georgian National Energy and Water Regulatory Commission, stated this in an interview with BMG.
According to Sanikidze, the main reason for the increase in Russian gas imports is growing domestic consumption. He noted that Georgia's demand for natural gas has grown significantly in recent years, and imports from alternative sources have increased to meet additional needs.
According to statistics, total gas consumption in Georgia increased from 2.595 billion cubic meters in 2021 to 3.172 billion cubic meters in 2025. Gas imports from Russia also increased from 397 million cubic meters to 886 million cubic meters over the same period.
However, Azerbaijan remains Georgia's main gas supplier. According to official data, gas imports from Azerbaijan have not decreased significantly in recent years. In 2025, Georgia purchased over 2 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan, accounting for 71.7% of the country's total demand.
According to Sanikidze, Georgia's top priority is ensuring energy security for consumers, so diversifying supply sources is considered an important factor.
The discussion also addressed the question of whether Russia is a reliable energy partner. Sanikidze noted that the country is working to increase the share of Azerbaijani gas, but that the capabilities and international obligations of supplier countries must be taken into account.
