In the first month of this year, 3,657 marriages and 1,729 divorces were registered in the registration authorities of Azerbaijan.
A calculation by Yeniavaz.com, citing published official data, shows that the number of marriages decreased by 8.7% (322 marriages) compared to the same period last year, and the number of divorces increased by 25% (359 divorces).
For information, after gaining independence in 1992, 68 thousand 740 marriages and 9 thousand 465 divorces were registered in Azerbaijan.
As can be seen from the figures, in 1992 the number of divorces was 7.3 times less than the number of marriages, but in January of this year the number of divorces was only 2.1 times less than the number of marriages.
The number of divorces per 1,000 people was 2.1 at the end of last year and 2 in January this year.
For comparison, in 1992 the number of divorces per 1000 people was 1.3. Since independence, the rate of divorces per 1,000 population has fallen to its lowest level in 1999. That year, the number of marriages in Azerbaijan was 7.4 times higher than the number of divorces.
The largest difference between divorces and marriages was recorded in 2011. Thus, in 2011, 88,145 marriages and 10,747 divorces were concluded in Azerbaijan, as a result of which the number of divorces was 8.2 times less than the number of marriages.
The result recorded in the number of divorces at the beginning and end of January this year was the highest result recorded since 1941. In 1941, when World War II began, the divorce rate per 1,000 people was 2.3.
In general, 1935 was the year of the highest number of divorces in Azerbaijan. In 1935, the divorce rate per 1,000 people was 4.9. Divorce fell to its lowest level in 1945, with the divorce rate per 1,000 population being 0.1. That year there were only 310 divorces in the country.
